The Pillar Society The Pillar Society was officially formed in 1994. Membership is limited to former employees of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and former members of the RCMP Security Service (or its predecessor branches of the RCMP), who left their employment in good standing. From time to time certain other individuals may be granted Honorary or Distinguished Membership by the Pillar Society Executive Board. Broadly, the purpose of the Society is to keep the membership informed about developments in, and in general to support, the Canadian Security Intelligence sector; and to foster friendship and promote the welfare of the Society's members. The Head Office and National Capital Chapter is in Ottawa and there are Regional Chapters in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax. There is a quarterly newsletter entitled "Pillar Talk" – which is circulated to all members. The Society is primarily a fraternal organization, although from time to time matters of interest arising from political and other developments in the security intelligence field in Canada are discussed or debated. Occasionally this may result in the Society taking an advocacy position and lobbying its position on the issue. The Society is not formally connected to or an extension of CSIS, although a measure of support and relationship does exist.
