Legacy of Ashes author and Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Tim Weiner leads discussion: "The Media and National Security and Intelligence: Mutual Dependence, Mutual Distrust"

    OTTAWA, March 20 /CNW/ - On April 1, for its first Ottawa program, the
Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) is collaborating with the Canadian
Association for Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS) to host a panel
discussion featuring New York Times security and intelligence correspondent
Tim Weiner.

    WHAT: "The Media and National Security and Intelligence: Mutual
    Dependence, Mutual Distrust": National security and intelligence have
    become a major focus for the Canadian media and for academics covering
    foreign policy, national security, and defence. While public interest has
    soared, media and academic access to information about these activities
    is constrained. At the same time, security and intelligence services have
    taken a heightened interest in their relationship with the media to
    supplement covert sources and to promote public understanding of security
    and intelligence in a Western democracy under threat. What is the right
    balance in the new security realities?

    WHO: New York Times journalist and author Tim Weiner (main presenter),
    whose book, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA, won the 2007
    National Book Award in the United States and was a finalist in the Lionel
    Gelber competition for best book on international affairs; Jeff Sallot,
    Carleton University journalism professor and long-time Globe and Mail
    reporter (panelist); Wesley Wark, Visiting Research Professor at the
    Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of
    Ottawa (panelist); Don Newman, Senior Parliamentary Editor for CBC News
    and the host of CBC Newsworld's Politics (moderator).
