Graduation (within the last five years) with a masters or doctoral degree from a recognized university with specialization in engineering, physics or a related discipline in a field associated to space sciences.
Applicants with a completed or soon to be completed doctoral degree will be given preference. (Official proof of education must be presented at the time of the interview). An average of at least 80%.
Experience
Experience in the interpretation of scientific and technical data.
Experience in the development and use of software applications in support of scientific and technical investigations.
Work Environment
The Department of National Defence and the Director General, Operational Research are presently recruiting a defence scientist (DS) to work in the Directorate of Strategic Intelligence, as a Space Systems intelligence analyst. This is an entry level opportunity for those who are committed and are seeking to apply their scientific and technical knowledge in space systems technology to assessing the global threat to Canada’s national security, the Canadian Armed Forces and other Canadian government agencies and its citizens, posed by the space systems used as weapons of mass destruction of potential adversaries. Challenge
The successful individual will be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team dedicated to providing the Department of National Defence and the Government of Canada with intelligence assessments of developments in space systems technologies and space programmes world-wide, and their implications to Canadian national security interests.
The individual will be required to apply up to date scientific and technical knowledge to interpret observed developments, analyze data, conduct evaluations of global capabilities in Space Systems and Space Programmes, maintain close ties with Defence R&D Canada research centers, conduct studies and evaluations, sponsor research that relates to assessing the threat from space systems, and maintain effective liaison with counterparts in other Canadian intelligence organizations and in the intelligence organizations of allied nations.
Note: Individuals should demonstrate competence in comparison with established standards of competence for scientists of similar academic background and experience, and evidence of promise of professional development as a Defence Scientist.
Additional Requirements / Comments
Breadth of experience is a key asset in military operational research. Hence, a career in the Operational Research Division (ORD) will include postings (normally for three years) in one or more ORD field stations located outside of Ottawa. Although most Division staff reside in Ottawa, recruits may be posted over the course of their careers to locations such as Halifax, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Kingston, Victoria and Colorado Springs (USA) or others. Indeed, new recruits may be hired directly into these locations. Mobility is a condition of employment.
