Mar 08, Colombo: The Canadian intelligence agency yesterday said it is considering whether to recommend that the LTTE be banned as a terrorist group in Canada.

Jim Judd, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, told a Senate anti-terrorism committee Monday, “It’s an issue that’s actively under consideration in the service.”

However, he noted that Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew has said that since the organization is involved in peace negotiations, it may be a bad idea to put them on the outlaw list.

Opposition members have condemned Liberal cabinet ministers, including Paul Martin when he was finance minister, for attending dinners with groups said to be front organizations for the Tigers.

Judd was testifying before a Senate committee formed to review the country's anti-terrorism legislation. The law, passed in a rush after the terror attacks of 2001, is up for special review. goto Top
