Canadian Press

OTTAWA (CP) - Dale Neufeld, a 20-year veteran of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, has been appointed acting director of the agency, Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan announced Saturday.

Neufeld, who had been deputy director of operations for CSIS since April 2001, succeeds Ward Elcock, CSIS director since 1994.

Elcock is completing his second five-year term, which is the maximum period that a director may serve, and will now become a senior advisor to the Privy Council Office.

A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Neufeld joined the RCMP in 1971 and served in various positions across the country before joining CSIS in 1984.
