OTTAWA: CANADIAN COMMANDOS WERE ON AFGHAN FRONTLINES | Canadian commandos were part of a U.S.-led task force that killed at least 115 Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters and captured another 107 over a six-month period in Afghanistan. The Ottawa Citizen newspaper reported Saturday that Task Force K-Bar included commandos from Canada's Joint Task Force 2 and six other countries. US military officials said it took part in 42 reconnaissance and surveillance missions as well as 23 "direct action" operations. Those missions ranged from snatching senior Taliban officials to ambushing enemy troops. In one mission, JTF2 commandos led a risky mountain climb to get to a high-altitude observation post while others combed caves in search of enemy forces or intelligence information. Many of the JTF2 missions took place at elevations of 3,000 to 4,000 metres in the rugged Afghan mountains. |
